Newborn screening developments in Serbia and Latvia 2022

The European Alliance for SMA Newborn Screening is proud to share some developments in Serbia and Latvia for SMA newborn screening.

Pilot starts in Serbia

On 12 April 2022, Serbia started a pilot programme for SMA newborn screening. The project was planned for over a year and has officially started. The pilot study is in one maternity hospital ” Narodni front” in Belgrade ( University hospital) and Biological Faculty Belgrade where around 8500 babies are born annually. The study is supposed to last for one year and the pilot leader is Miloš Brkušanin PhD. For more information contact: [email protected]

Pilot study in Latvia publishes results of SMA newborn screening

The International Society for Neonatal Screening published a special issue on SMA newborn screening including New-Born Screening for Spinal Muscular Atrophy: Results of a Latvian Pilot Study. “This pilot study identified two SMA 5q-positive cases with a resultant frequency of 1:5205.” (Source)

The research was published in February and is available in full text, open-access by Dr. Linda Gailite and the team at the Riga Stradins University and Riga Children’s Clinical University Hospital.
